‘The Wild Horses of Newbury’ was shot by me, Mark Carroll, very early on a single morning in February 1996 at the building site of the Newbury Bypass. (UK) This controversial road was to cut through some beautiful, ancient English countryside and had met with massive and radical direct action protests, hence the number of security guards. The whole episode only lasted a few minutes.. nothing was staged. The security guards and police had circled two very old Oak trees and were preparing to chop them down , when two scruffy, seemingly wild horses appeared and began to interfere with the felling. One of the horses even confronted one of the police horses…..
It was a very magical moment.

“Prior to recording Broadcast And The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults Of The Radio Age, Cargill and Keenan had relocated from Birmingham to the country town of Hungerford, a place the duo soon discovered was ripe with nearby witchy and occultist phenomena, from the haunted Littlecote House Hotel to nearby Stonehenge. While Witch Cults symbolized a cosmopolitan party thrown by occultists and country witches, Broadcast’s 2009 tour EP Mother Is The Milky Way was a fully bucolic recording, comprised of home-recorded demos of a more folk-inspired aesthetic quality, with the density of its predecessor stripped away to make room for twittering birdsongs, the laughter of children, and ambient marketplace chatter.
Keenan is our guide through an imagined Hungerford, and the record feels at times like a fictitious collaboration between Virginia Astley and Nurse With Wound – Kurt Schwitters even pops in for a beer and a bit of Ursonate babble. ‘Elegant Elephant’ is one of the EP’s more traditionally lovely moments and a perfect encapsulation of the quiet magic the duo achieve on Milky Way; it provides a rare peek into the more intimate domestic side of Keenan and Cargill’s life together, and even though it’s a fabrication, it’s no less striking”.

‘I ended up at an abandoned brickyard at the very edge of my chosen area. I suppose that it had ceased to be used about three years before, and it was now a dumping ground for any household rubbish too big for the bin. But successive excavations of the sand and clay for the bricks had left the yard with a legacy of mature waste ground. The abandoned mounds were thick with wild rose, hawthorn and the young shoots of rosebay. The steep-sided pits had filled with water, and though they had little or no vegetation in them, they were buzzing with water boatmen, diving beetles and newts. And the paths between, once heavily-used tracks over the light soil, carried one of the most brilliant collections of dry-soil flowers I have ever seen: ox-eye daisies, centauries, vetches, late cowslips, lady’s bed straw, musk mallow knee-high.’
