Don Carlos – The Father of Italian Dream House
“Back in those years if you were not elegant, you remained off the premises”
Carlo Troja (aka Don Carlos) lives in the northern Italian city of Varese – a small yet perfectly-formed settlement adorned with art nouveau villas. His sprawling DJ career began in the late ’70s and early ’80s. His production debut launched with a glorious bang in 1991, with the genre-defining ‘Alone’ arriving on Irma offshoot, Calypso Records. The track stood out in the most elegant of manners: managing to float with ethereal majesty above the often brash, obvious chords and hyped snare rolls of many of its piano house contemporaries. Bewitching pads, emotive chord progressions and levitating synths glide over crisp drums, delicate percussion and mood-enhancing bass – a meditative dream house archetype that magnificently endures to this day.

Sueno Latino
Sueño Latino the band was Andrea Gemolotto, Claudio Collino, Davide Rizzatti, Riccardo Persi. In 1989, the group released the ambient house classic “Sueño Latino.” The track is based on Manuel Göttsching’s album-length E2-E4. In a later release (the Winter Version), Göttsching himself added guitar parts to the track.
Italian Dream House Origins
NOTE: Not to be confused with Italo Disco. At the tail end of the 1980s, a new take on deep house began to emerge from Italian studios. ‘Dream house’ drew inspiration from key U.S deep house records of the period – the spacey melodiousness of Larry Heard’s productions, and the rich jazziness of tracks originating in New Jersey in particular – but sounded distinctly different. Its’ ‘head-in-the-clouds’ feel – all rich chords, tactile basslines, fluid piano lines and starry electronics – made ‘dream house’ a uniquely Italian proposition.
