Em Burrows one of the original presenters from way back on her last edition of The Golden Apples of the Sun

It has been a joy and a privilege to share music and connect with listeners on @rtrfm for nearly 10 years! Yesterday was a bittersweet day as I presented my final @goldenapplesofthesunradioshow before I move to Berlin in August. I shared some new stuff and lots of favourites. You can restream the show/check out the playlist on the RTR website (navigate to the program grid).

Thanks to @claudemono for having me as part of the GA collective all these years. Super grateful for all of it. (…and Claude says a bigger thankyou right back at you Em Burrows!!)

Radio Show – 30 October 2022 – Episode 600

Claude Mono (2022):

This weekend is exciting as I get to curate Episode 600 of The Golden Apples of the Sun Radio Show. So for an appropriately low-key and lo-fi celebration, and as I was lucky enough to be there, I will slide back to 2011 and the birth of the show. It was a different time – a time of freak-folk, neofolk chillwave and glitchtronica – when the Philadelphia psych scene was the centre of the musical universe and Leafcutter John played at The Bakery in Perth. But go back before that and there was the Arthur magazine CD compilation that gives the show its name – curated by Devendra Banhart who also provided the front and back cover artwork, handwritten sleeve notes and art on the disk itself. The sounds will move forward ever so gently with more strange but beautiful otherworldly classics hardly known by anyone except the show’s listeners and presenters.

“Please don’t let what was get in the way of what’s next. Don’t forget that what’s to come hasn’t come yet”.

Devendra Banhart – I Rememner

The Golden Apples of the Sun Compilation – Stereogum Retrospective Review by Sam Hockey-Smith 2013

Golden Apples was an introduction to a new-old sound, but it also re-colored what already existed. For just a minute, it seemed like I’d discovered a new way to be. Real life soon got in the way of that. Relationships and jobs and money and reality all imposed on the hushed utopia of The Golden Apples of the Sun but listening to it now can still transport me right back to a time when simplicity felt like truth.

Full review by Sam Hockey-Smith here

The Golden Apples of the Sun Compilation Pitchfork Review (2004)

Unlike Brian Eno, who kept his No New York sampler to just four acts, the bearded bard here musters a generous spread of 20 diverse freakfolk acts to serve as representatives of the various facets of the underground’s most recent (and most promising) pigeonhole.
