SUMMER SCHOOL
The Golden Apples of Nowhere
For this episode Brad Bowden & Mike Tucak bring RTRFM’s new show ‘Middle of Nowhere’ for a visit to Golden Apples. Its cosmic and spacious country from country backroads, lost valleys and mountains and all the deserts you’ve never been to.
Cosmic country takes the traditional basis of Americana and folk music and fuses it with more exploratory elements. Lost sounds. Alternative country and folk from the outer reaches of… nowhere.
Cosmic country and ambient folk, old with wandering through lost hollow lands and hilly lands. Soaring pedal steel and sad banjo seeking where she has gone. Deep resonant guitar kissing long lost lips, brushstrokes on the drums among the dappled grass by the highway. Strings plucked and torn, till time and times are done.
Running from December 2023 through to February 2024. The show’s regular presenters, guests and friends present a curated season of weekly 2-hour explorations to different musical places.

The Middle of Nowhere Radion Show on RTRFM
Here in the West, maybe we don’t like to think about the deserts and wheat fields separating us from everything else. It’s too vast. There’s a lot of Country out there.
This show is no place for Country and Western, but it is music for our highways and open plains, from right here in WA, and around the world. Contemporary alt-country and alt-folk – music with silence and space in it. Deep resonant guitars, finger-picking, pedal steels and vocal laments. Gender and First Nations inclusive.
Love, longing and loneliness amidst a landscape of isolation and desolation.
We’ve all been there, and now you’re here: The Middle of Nowhere.

This edition of the Golden Apples is hosted by Mike Tucak and includes a delve into the source recordings of Joe Acheson’s 2016 Hidden Orchestra “Wingbeats”…
Bandcamp Daily Think of Wingbeats by Hidden Orchestra as a bedroom symphony. Unlike a traditional symphony, Wingbeats doesn’t require a concert hall or a stage filled with dozens of musicians. Instead, the individual parts are painstakingly pieced together by one person: Brighton, UK, based Joe Acheson. The result is a kind of expansive intimacy.
“For as long as I can remember, I have found that what draws me to a piece of music can often be one small detail—a single characteristic or maybe a fleeting moment of beautiful sound or compelling rhythm,” Acheson explains in the album notes. On Wingbeats, that approach is on full display. The first track presents the entire finished composition. Then, the deconstruction begins: Each instrument or layer of sound is relegated to its own track, then listed as numbered “Sources.” Songs like “Wingbeats Source II – Cello” and field recordings like “Wingbeats Source VI – Dawn Chorus” offer up-close looks at the different components of the fully-assembled title track. The entire composition has a meditative force—a sonic balm to counter our age of deep anxiety.
On the opening “Wingbeats,“ church bells mingle with a flock of birds recorded in the snowy French Alps; a bass clarinet line delivers swelling, lyrical melodies, and a singing saw provides a gentle harmony. Each individual track in Wingbeats is a 21st century symphony in miniature; taken together, it sounds like bliss.
