Jade N returms to curate his second Golden Apples. Here is what he had to say about it.

“I didn’t really have any plan for this show other than to follow a certain instinctual thread that enabled me to tie together different expressions of psychedelia, folk, shoegaze, dream pop and abstract soundscape from across different genres and eras. The set was actually pieced together very slowly over a long period of time, many things were shifted in and out over the process, like a geological formation, and some things were included right at the last minute, as though by thunderbolt. The sequence presented here is really just a crystallisation of the exploration of a certain structure of musical feeling that could, in theory, continue indefinitely, and in fact does in practice.
The mashups were an experiment to see if I could create live sound collages with found sources, and attempt to capture certain metaphysical themes. I’m not sure if they work entirely, but I think they are not without some interest.
In terms of the flow of the set, putting together such disparate entities as the Pink Floyd and Lawrence English, Julie Doiron and the Rolling Stones, Jane Fonda and Build an Ark, etc. stemmed from the perception of a transhistorical pastoral and rarefied aesthetic that is deeply embedded in the musical psyche, or in sonic creation more generally. The will to access and evoke an esoteric, pre-modern–or anti-modern–post-empirical reality of the future, in which the self and the landscape are no longer separate but complementary and inter-dependent, is something that has preoccupied folk traditions all over the world throughout time, and continues to infiltrate contemporary strands of all kinds of underground and popular music which share some affinity with the sublime.
This set was, in a way, an attempt to represent that. It clearly falls short of that aim, but hopefully hints in the right direction, and at further archaeological work to be done in this area.”

The Owl Service and….

The childrens’ TV series “The Owl Service”, adapted by Alan Garner from his prize-winning novel, was a sexually-charged tale of adolescent jealousy that broke new ground by pushing hard at the boundaries of children’s television.

At the Golden Apples we like to learn about our musical and cover-art reference points and we thank The Hauntological Society for this one

… and while we are thinking about eerie children’s TV show themes from the 1970s …
