Radio Show – 26 February 2023 – Episode 617

Concept Artist at The Golden Apples of the Sun, Perth-loved song-creator and beat-maker, head honcho of WA Apparel, educator & Dad drops in for a special edition…

We lost a true hip hop pioneer a few weeks ago, Trugoy the Dove aka Dave from De La Soul. Diger Rokwell uses De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising as an entry point to explore the lasting impact of the Daisy Age of flower power infused hip hop. In 1989 De La Soul heralded in the DAISY AGE meaning ‘Da Inner Sound Y’all’ with the release of their innovative debut. This too short-lived period of hip hop with the use of conscious lyrics, quirkiness, 60s folk and rock samples, raw beats, sketches and Afrocentric ideals cleared the ground for other artists to explore creativity and carry the fire on this sound. But does it continue? In this episode of GAOTS, Diger takes you on a personal guilty pleasure tour of the psychedelic, crusty, absurd, obscure, cosmic and of course the peaceful side of hip hop to celebrate his own birthday weekend. Peace!
