Fairyland
Fairyland hits Sundance in January 2023. Its been a long time coming with a bare minimum of info flow. I first read about the film way back in 2014 over at the sadly no longer maintained but wonderfully still there ‘I Want to be a Coppola’ blog – read here
Walt Mink ‘Shine’ Video (1993)
Sofia Coppola’s first official credit as a director is for a music video– a format that served as the entry point into the industry for many members of her generation. Created for Walt Mink’s track “SHINE” in 1993, the video marks the first appearance of several themes and images that would come to define Coppola’s distinct aesthetic.
“SHINE” seems to foreshadow the central approach Coppola would take for her 1999 debut feature, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES: a dreamy, shoegazing feel with a pastel color palette and a warm, summery setting. The piece is mostly shot as a conventional performance video, intercut with handheld footage of teenagers napping in the grass and swimming in the pool.

Coppola Family Tree
Family Tree Recommendations:
Francis Ford Coppola:
‘Apocalypse Now Final Cut’ (2019 – of the four versions the must see 3-hour reedited 4K version from original master negatives) + the 1 hour 47 min Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse
Roman Coppola:
‘CQ’ is a 2001 film written and directed by Roman Coppola and is his feature directorial debut. Set in Paris in 1969 the film is a homage to 1960s European spy/sci-fi spoofs like 1968’s Barbarella and Danger: Diabolik. As well as featuring ‘Dragonfly’ a ‘film within a film’ it also has a killer soundtrack by French electronic band Mellow (see also Air) which was released on cult label Emperor Norton Records.
Gia Coppola:
Atmosphere and aesthetics abound. The kids in Gia Coppola’s ‘Palo Alto’ move as through a dream. Set in the Northern California city that gives the movie its title, its about that twilight period between childhood’s end and the start of young adulthood. Here, under wavering palm trees, teenagers slip through homes and streets with the vagueness that comes with certain visions of adolescence. The film is based on a book of short stories written by James Franco who plays a key role in the film and the film refers imprecisely to his growing up in Palo Alto in the 1980s and ’90s. (New York Times review)
Sofia Coppola:
Marie Antoinette is one of the more controversial films of the Sofia Coppola catalogue “its a fusion of modern and classical iconography that has become a signature of Coppola’s work, and nowhere has it provoked more controversy than in her mischievous confection about the glory days and eventual demise of Versailles.
