Magic Eye = (haze pop + shoegaze + indie-pop) x lo-fi
Magic Eye’s latest cassette, Babylon on Not Not Fun was almost scrapped as the hazy gazer pop sound synonymous with the Edinburgh four piece was compromised when the group attempted to record in a professional studio. So the band took their belongings back to the bedroom, piecing together the Babylon cassette on their own
You can get the track Golden Eye as performed live in the video on the 2013 sampler from the Song, By Toad Record Label/Blog from Edinburgh Scotland.
Check outa very cool mixtape they did for Impose Magazine here
“…This mix is made from songs that we were into around the time of recording the album. We stitched them together and ran them through our effects. The Robert Fripp tune is a song I wish I could have listened to properly, but it’s from pieces of his youtube interview in the reverb chamber with interview clips in between…”

Still finding little souvenirs left behind from the Golden Apples Valentines Day date with Indie Pop mixtape
This track is from 2013’s Slow Summits, the first proper LP since 1997. The film clip has a nice almost hauntological feel.

How Does It Feel To Be Loved…
The Golden Apples of the Sun Radio Show presents a special Valentines Day musical date with the sound of Indie-Pop – listen to the show with someone you love…
How Does It Feel To Be Loved (also known as HDIF) is a legendary intimate and DIY London club night playing indie pop and a number of other genres including, soul, girl groups, and sixties heartbreak sounds. HDIF has been going since 2002 and is genuinely adored: “Legendary indie club,” – NME. “Much-loved indie pop institution,” – The Quietus. “With a decade of great nights under its belt How Does it Feel to Be Loved? is one of London’s most enduring and influential underground indie get-togethers,” – Flavorpill. “A speakeasy for anyone who suspects that their life is one big Smiths song,”…etc whatthe punters who have been say is equally wonderfful (here)
In 2006 the club released its compilation ‘The Kids at the Club’ celebrating the 20th anniversary of the legendary NME’s C-86 compilation. The Kids At The Club is now itself regarded as a classic. As Pitchfork said in their review ”Indeed, another difference between The Kids at the Club and the indie pop canon is the very nostalgia entailed by such an endeavor. The Pastels, Talulah Gosh, and the Field Mice all had obvious influences, (but here these new bands) carved out identifiable sounds of their own…Both longtime followers of the scene and curious newbies will all likely find their own tracks to love…”
2015 saw the last night of HDIF at one of its longer residencies and almost spiritual home The Canterbury Arms in Brixton. Like a mini-tragedy that could inherit the finest indie-pop The Canterbury Arms was being (and now has been) demolished.
Check out Claude Mono’s original HDIF inspired mixtape from 2009 here
Here are some photos of Indie kids having fun at How Does It Feel at the tragically now demolished Canterbury Arms in Brixton
