Radio Show – 4 April 2021 – Episode 520
Andy Votel and Jane Weaver

Folk is not a Four Letter Word

This edition of The Golden Apples of the Sun is a revisit, 16 years later, to the release of Andy Votel’s seminal compilation ‘Folk is not a Four Letter Word’ and its musical surroundings. It’s a return to the source – all wyrd folk, psych, pastoral beauty, and otherworldly electronica.

It was 2005 and the compilation ‘Folk is not a Four Letter Word’ was the debut release on Delay 68 Records, a brand-new label focusing on folk, funk, psych, prog, ye-ye, & beat from across the world. It was compiled by with sleeve notes written by and artwork by Andy Votel who went on to create the fabulous and much-loved Finders Keepers Records.

Looking back it was specail time of convergence and an amazing join the dots of:

  • The evolution of Delay 68 Records, Bird Records, B-Movie Music and Finders Keepers
  • The beginning of the beautiful album and single artwork that simply overflows with reference points that continue through to the latest releases
  • Compilations paying tribute to original psych folk legends like Susan Christie and Wendy Flowers only to see them then appear on albums by Jane Weaver
  • Strange nursery rhyme folk and Fuzzy Felt folk crossing over with Hauntology
  • The excitement of Vashti Bunyan’s second and third LPs about 40 years after her first
  • New folk like Speck Mountain bookending classics
  • Bearded Ladies…
  • Eastern European folk…
  • Further discovery like the Courtyard Music Group and Extradition..

Very Wyrd… ‘Trust Me’, featuring Rosi Lalor on vocals, is re-imagined by The Simonsound as mythical adventure story, told using analogue synthesisers, Optigan orchestra, home made percussion, pre recorded flute replayed and performed on reel to reel tape machine, and a scattering of voices plucked from the ether.
